DETROIT, June 15 (UPI) -- Detroit police said their narcotics squad put the wrong evidence on display when they summoned the media for a look at the spoils of a major drug sweep.
The bags of Ecstasy pills police said were seized earlier this month in the operation had evidence tags with a 2008 date marked on them, The Detroit News noted Friday.
"They accidentally grabbed evidence from another case," Police Sgt. Eren Stephens told the newspaper. "But the majority of the drugs (on display Thursday) were from the recent confiscation."
"It was a mistake," Stephens said. "Some of those bags were accidentally grabbed from the property room."
The operation nevertheless produced some impressive results. The DPD's sweep last week netted $1.3 million worth of Ecstasy, cocaine and marijuana as well as 87 arrests and 20 firearms
