Woman's suit says ex gave her herpes

CHICAGO, June 13 (UPI) -- A Chicago-area woman has sued her married ex-boyfriend, charging he acquired herpes in another illicit affair and passed it on to her.

In court papers filed in Cook County, the plaintiff, using the pseudonym "Elizabeth Doe," says her boyfriend told her he was free of any sexually transmitted diseases and promised he would be faithful to her, the Chicago Sun-Times Media Network reported. She said he realized he had herpes but did not tell her about it and continued to engage in unprotected sex.

She said she broke off the affair in March when she learned she had herpes.

Doe seeks at least $200,000 in compensation plus payment of her medical expenses and other costs.

Herpes is caused by a sexually transmitted virus. The Centers for Disease Control said about one in six people between the ages of 14 and 49 are infected, but many do not have symptoms and do not realize they have the disease.
