Mysterious odor causes flight to turn back

OAKLAND, Calif., June 13 (UPI) -- Southwest Airlines flight 508 returned shortly after takeoff from Oakland (Calif.) International Airport because of a mysterious odor, officials said.

Flight 508, bound for Burbank, took off at 7:12 a.m. PDT Tuesday, but the flight crew alerted airport officials 10 minutes later they were returning because of a mysterious smell in the cabin, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday.

The smell caused a flight attendant to become ill. Upon returning to the airport, emergency medical technicians examined her and took her to the hospital, said airport spokeswoman Joanne Holloway.

The 139 passengers were put on another plane to Burbank while Oakland firefighters searched the Boeing 737 for the cause of the smell. Holloway told the Chronicle officials had not located the source.
