WASHINGTON, June 11 (UPI) -- The U.S. Supreme Court Monday, without comment, rejected an appeal of a lawsuit challenging President Barack Obama's eligibility for office.

The court upheld a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision upholding a lower court order throwing out the suit that questions Obama's eligibility as "a natural born citizen," arguing that because his father was not a U.S. citizen, Obama is ineligible to hold the presidency.

The court rejected a suit filed by Alan Keyes and a number of other plaintiffs. The lower court said they had no standing to file the suit.

So-called "birthers" have dogged the Obama presidency, first alleging he lacked a valid birth certificate and then saying the long-form Hawaii birth certificate released by the White House was a fake even though the state has verified its authenticity. Obama's birth also was announced in the Honolulu Advertiser Aug. 13, 1961. He was born Aug. 4, 1961, at Kapiolani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital in Honolulu.
