GLASGOW, Mont., June 11 (UPI) -- A West Virginia man writing a memoir called "The Kindness of America" while hitchhiking across the country was shot in Montana, officials said.

Raymond Dolin, 39, was sitting at the side of a road and awaiting a ride Saturday night near Glasgow, Mont., when a man in a pickup truck pulled up, shot him and drove off, Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier said.

After a 4-hour manhunt across several counties and tribal lands, Charles Lloyd Danielson III, 52, of Washington, Mont., was arrested by Roosevelt County officers, and was being held on suspicion of felony assault with a weapon and driving under the influence, the Billings Gazette reported Monday.

Dolin was recovering at a local hospital, the newspaper said.

"It's totally random. These two gentlemen did not know each other," Meier said of the incident. "We don't know of a motive."
