Woman, 18, dies in Grand Canyon fall

BILLINGS, Mont., June 9 (UPI) -- An 18-year-old woman working her first day at a concession stand died in a 400-foot fall into the grand canyon of Yellowstone National Park, park officials say.

The accident occurred Thursday near Inspiration Point while the woman was hiking along the canyon's North Rim Trail with three acquaintances, the park service said in a release posted on its Web site.

The victim's name had not been released.

The woman was off the trail when loose rock of a promontory gave way underneath her, park officials said. Rangers received a call alerting them to the accident about 5:45 p.m.
