Link between Canada, Los Angeles killings?

June 8, 2012 at 5:47 PM   |   Comments

LOS ANGELES, June 8 (UPI) -- The Canadian man who allegedly killed and dismembered his gay lover may have been in Los Angeles when a gay man was killed and cut up, detectives say.

Investigators are unsure when Hervey Medellin, 66, a former flight attendant, died. Friends said they hadn't seen him since late December and then his head, hands and feet were found in mid-January near the "Hollywood" sign, KTLA-TV reported.

Luka Rocco Magnotta, 29, is in custody in Berlin, awaiting extradition to Canada where he faces first-degree murder charges. Police in Montreal told Quebecor Media they are working with Los Angeles on the case.

He allegedly killed Jun Lin, 32, a student from China, and cut up the body, mailing parts to political parties in Ottawa and to two schools in Vancouver.

Andy Smith, a Los Angeles police commander, said investigators don't believe Magnotta was in the city in late December. Quebecor Media said there are reports he was there in January.

Magnotta has used several identities, making tracking his movements more difficult, Smith said.
