WASHINGTON, June 7 (UPI) -- U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood released a "Blueprint for Ending Distracted Driving" Thursday, a three-point plan to keep eyes on the road.
The plan addresses state governments, the auto industry and driving education professionals in different ways to put an end to the use of cellphones while driving, said a U.S. Transportation Department press release.
The 11 remaining states without distracted driving laws will be encouraged to enact such laws, while the auto industry will be encouraged to adopt guidelines to lower the level of distraction of new technology in vehicles. Finally the plan would encourage driver education professionals to educate future drivers on the dangers of distracted driving.
In addition, LaHood announced the award of $2.4 million in federal support for California and Delaware to expand the pilot program "Phone in One Hand, Ticket in the Other."
