WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., June 5 (UPI) -- A violent domestic incident at a Florida trailer park left two people dead and a sheriff's lieutenant and a K-9 dog injured, officials said.

The incident began at the Casa Del Monte mobile home community in suburban West Palm Beach on Monday around 7 p.m., the Palm Beach (Fla.) Post reported.

When police arrived at the scene, a woman had been shot multiple times by her boyfriend and left for dead, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said.

The woman was shot once and tried to escape, but her boyfriend pulled her back and shot her several more times, Bradshaw said.

The shooter then took off on foot. He was spotted near a privacy wall not far from the trailer park.

At some point during the chase, the suspect fired at the lieutenant and K-9, injuring both, Bradshaw said. The lieutenant shot back and killed the suspect.

The names of the deceased were withheld upon notification of next of kin.

Bradshaw said the lieutenant underwent surgery Monday night and is now recovering. The K-9 is expected to survive, but with the bullet remaining in its torso.

"This is a dangerous job," said Bradshaw. "We're a busy agency. We handle over a million calls for service."
