Condemned man found hanging in cell

SAN QUENTIN, Calif., May 30 (UPI) -- The body of a 68-year-old inmate who was on death row in California's San Quentin Prison for eight years was found hanging in his cell, officials said.

James Lee Crummel was convicted in 2004 of kidnapping, raping and killing a 13-year-old boy. Lt. Sam Robinson of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said a guard doing a check before dinner found Crummel dead in his cell Sunday afternoon, CNN reported.

Robinson said Crummel was not on suicide watch but had been observed about 15 minutes before his body was discovered.

No details were released about the death, which was under investigation.

James Wilfred Trotter, Crummel's victim, vanished in 1979, a year after California passed a new death penalty law. His body was discovered in 1990 but wasn't identified until six years later.
