MIAMI, May 26 (UPI) -- A Miami police officer shot and killed a man who had eaten part of another man's face, leaving the victim fighting to survive the attack, authorities said.

The attacker was naked when he accosted the victim at about 2 p.m. EDT Saturday near the offices of The Miami Herald. Witnesses said a woman who had seen the two men fighting flagged down a nearby police officer.

As the officer approached the scene, the attacker was chewing his victim's head, witnesses said. After the attacker ignored the officer's order to back away from the victim, the officer shot him but the attacker kept eating and the officer fired more shots, the Herald reported.

The victim was reported in critical condition at a hospital.

The names of the victim and the attacker were not reported.

Police have not identified the officer, but a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police said the officer was a hero for shooting the attacker, the newspaper reported.
