WASHINGTON, May 25 (UPI) -- Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has an advantage over U.S. President Obama when it comes to white middle-class voters, a poll indicates.

In the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll, 58 per cent of struggling white middle-class voters said Romney would do more to advance their families' economic interests compared to 32 per cent who think Obama would, The Washington Post reported Friday.

The poll found the former Massachusetts governor also has a distinct advantage over the president when the same question is put to voters who have lost a job in recent years or have a family member or close friend who is unemployed.

However, non-white voters give Obama a 3-1 lead over Romney regardless of whether they are struggling or in good shape financially, the poll revealed.

Fifty per cent of all voters said Obama would do more to advance the interests of the middle class generally while 44 percent said Romney would.

The poll was conducted by telephone May 17-20 among a national random sample of 1,004 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
