Unabomber appears in Harvard alum magazine

BOSTON, May 24 (UPI) -- Harvard University graduate Theodore John Kaczynski, better known as the Unabomber, updated the school's alumni magazine to reflect his eight life sentences.

This week marks the 50th reunion of the Harvard class of 1962, which includes Kaczynski, and the alumni magazine included updates to help alums catch up with old classmates.

Kaczynski's entry lists "prisoner" as his occupation. Under "awards," it reads "eight life sentences issued by the United States Eastern District of California, 1998."

Now 70, he listed his residence as the federal supermax prison in Florence, Colo., where ABC News reported he is serving his 15th year on charges of illegally transporting bombs through the postal service.

Prior to Kaczynski's 20-year mail-bombing campaign, in which three people died and 23 others were injured, his classmates would better know him as Dr. Kaczynski.

Accepted to Harvard at the age of 16, Kaczynski was something of an intellectual prodigy. After earning his undergraduate degree at the Ivy League school, he completed his doctorate in mathematics at the University of Michigan at 25, and went on to teach at the University of California at Berkeley as the youngest professor ever hired by the university.

After less than two years, Kaczynski resigned from teaching and went to live in a shack just outside Lincoln, Mont. In 1978, he began his campaign of bombings in response to what he saw as the erosion of personal freedom and the impingement of technology on modern life.
