KENNEDYVILLE, Md., May 24 (UPI) -- Maryland State Police and fire crews found the bodies of a man and his two sons early Thursday in a manure pit on a dairy farm, officials say.

The three were last seen around 2 p.m. Wednesday and were reported missing by concerned family members around 6 p.m. when they did not return for work on their own farm.

Police discovered the father's pick-up truck and a tractor, both still running, near the manure pit around 8 p.m.

Heavy-duty vacuuming equipment was brought in late Wednesday night to excavate the pit, which is about 150 feet wide and 300 feet long.

The bodies were not recovered until early Thursday, police said.

Police said there were no witnesses and the death appears to be accidental, but investigators are awaiting autopsy results before ruling out foul play, state police spokesman Greg Shipley said.
