Trooper faces charges in fatal crash

NORRISTOWN, Pa., May 23 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania state trooper faces criminal charges for an off-duty car crash that killed a 21-year-old college student.

Investigators say Barry Searfoss failed a field sobriety test shortly after he rear-ended a car driven by Robin Williams. Searfoss was behind the wheel of his pickup truck, and Williams' car exploded in flames when he hit it Friday night in Upper Dublin, a Philadelphia suburb.

Searfoss, 40, who has been a trooper for 11 years, is on desk duty. Prosecutors in Montgomery County say they are waiting for the results of lab tests before filing criminal charges.

Family members say Williams, an only daughter, was working full time, going to college and helping take care of her bedridden mother.

Doreen Thomas, a cousin, said the victim's mother is having a hard time dealing with her daughter's death.

"Her mom is saying, 'How can I get through this? What am I going to do?' And the only thing I can tell her is minute by minute," Thomas said.
