Makayla Darnell was pronounced dead late Thursday at a Toledo hospital, The (Toledo) Blade reported. She was airlifted there from Blanchard Valley Hospital near her home in Allen County.
An autopsy performed Friday determined the 3-day-old infant died of head injuries, Dr. Cynthia Beisser, a deputy Lucas County medical examiner, said. She said the injuries were consistent with dog bites.
Steve Kahle, a coroner's investigator, said Makayla was asleep in a swing in the living room at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday while her mother and grandmother were in the kitchen. The two women said they heard nothing from the living room.
"It all appeared to happen in a matter of seconds," he said.
The dog, a pit-bull mix, is being held for 10 days quarantine. A judge will decide whether it should be destroyed.
