CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., May 16 (UPI) -- The University of Virginia lacrosse player convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend was apparently unaware she was dead until police told him, a video suggests.
George Huguely V is awaiting sentencing for the second-degree murder of Yeardley Love. He was convicted in February.
The news media got a brief look at the videotape of Huguely's police interrogation and other items of evidence Tuesday, The Baltimore Sun reported. The tape and slides of e-mails, documents and crime-scene photographs were shown in a courtroom in Charlottesville, Va.
During the 64-minute interview, Huguely admitted going to Love's apartment while he was drunk and said he should have stayed away. He imitates her telling him to leave.
When a police officer tells him, 50 minutes after the questioning began, that Love is dead and he killed her, Huguely reacted with disbelief.
"She's not dead, she's not dead, she's not dead," he said, speaking with increasing speed. "She has to be alive, she has to be."
Love, 22, of Chevy Chase, Md., was also a university lacrosse player.
