Harris receives Air Force contract

MELBOURNE, Fla., May 15 (UPI) -- The U.S. Air Force has ordered an undisclosed number of multiband manpack radios for its combat controllers and other ground personnel.

Harris Corp. said the $8 million initial delivery order came under a new indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity award from the Air Force for its Falcon III, AN/PRC-117G system.

"The AN/PRC-117G radio system addresses growing Air Force requirements for multiband, multimode radios that deliver secure access to voice, video and data in real time,'' said George Helm, president, Department of Defense business, Harris RF Communications.

"The radio provides critical real-time information to warfighters on the move and in the air to achieve unprecedented situational awareness on the battlefield."

Harris' AN/PRC-117G is JTRS Software Communications Architecture-certified and NSA Type-1 certified. It provides mobile ad-hoc networking and voice and high-bandwidth data applications to support network-enabled missions.

Harris said the AN/PRC-117G is about half the size of previous manpack radios, lighter than previous radios and more power efficient.
