NEW HAVEN, Conn., May 14 (UPI) -- Some 27 people were hospitalized after a commercial truck collided with the back of a bus in New Haven, Conn., Monday morning, officials said.
Ambulances were dispatched to the scene in response to a "mass casualty" report on Interstate 95, WTIC-TV, Hartford, Conn., reported..
While a man was loading his bike at the front of the bus, a commercial truck slammed into the back of the bus, pushing it about 100 feet before coming to a stop, said East Haven Fire Chief Doug Jackson.
Four or five of the victims were hospitalized in critical condition, among them the truck driver and the man with the bicycle, WTIC reported.
More than 10 ambulances arrived at the scene to transport the injured to a nearby hospital. Jackson said the bus driver stayed on the scene the whole time, expressing concern for the passengers, some of whom ride the bus every day, the report said.
The truck was carrying grease from restaurant kitchens, which spilled in the crash, starting a small fire. A fire truck on the scene was able to put out the fire quickly, Jackson said.
