CHICAGO, May 12 (UPI) -- Chicago officials reached an agreement with a nurses union for a rally to be held Friday in Daley Plaza protesting the upcoming NATO summit, the union said.
The city, backed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, had earlier said it would revoke National Nurses United's permit for the Daley Center protest and move the event to Grant Park after a concert by former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello was added to the agenda, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Saturday.
But the union said late Friday the city had decided to approve the Daley Center rally after the parties agreed to reduce it from 5 hours to 2 hours with a 30-minute concert at the end, the newspaper said.
"The mayor's office and NATO backed down because we stood up," Morello said in a statement. "This is a great victory for the nurses union, the people of Chicago, free speech and rock 'n' roll."
The agreement also stipulates the rally will be a stationary event at the plaza and not include a march through downtown. The Chicago NATO summit is scheduled for May 20-21.
