MAYS LANDING, N.J., May 11 (UPI) -- A South Jersey radio host and advocate for veterans was found shot dead Thursday in the bedroom of her Atlantic City-area home, authorities said.

Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel said an employee found April Kauffman's body in her home in Linwood and called police shortly before 11:30 a.m. EDT, The Press of Atlantic City reported.

Kauffman's husband, James, is an endocrinologist in Linwood and she owned two businesses in Northfield. She was best known for hosting radio shows, most recently one on WOND-AM, Linwood, and for volunteer activities like making Thanksgiving Dinner for 50 Coast Guard trainees at her home.

Kauffman had recently helped win a significant victory -- providing medical care for vets in the Atlantic City area. Donna Clementoni, a friend, worked with her in the effort.

"Literally, yesterday, she was telling me that this was the absolute best time of her life," Clementoni said. "She said getting the local medical care for veterans was her crowning achievement."
