Diplomat's daughter sues NYC for arrest

NEW YORK, May 8 (UPI) -- The daughter of an Indian diplomat is suing the city of New York for $1.5 million for her wrongful arrest on cyberbullying charges last year, officials say.

Krittika Biswas filed a complaint in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, contending her arrest was a "sham" unsubstantiated by any evidence, and that she was arrested due to a conspiracy of "race-based animus … against persons of Southeast Asian Indian descent."

The city Law Department said Monday it had not yet been served with the suit.

Biswas was suspended from John Bowne High School in New York's Queens borough and subsequently arrested for allegedly sending profane and threatening e-mails to teachers. After a male classmate was found to be the real culprit, the charges against Biswas were dropped.

The New York Post reported Ravi Batra, Biswas' lawyer at the time, said receiving a key to the city from Mayor Michael Bloomberg would send the message "that diplomats are welcome in New York."
