Rubio says he's a team player for Romney

May 6, 2012 at 1:23 PM   |   Comments

WASHINGTON, May 6 (UPI) -- Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said he and a "deep bench" of up-and-coming Republicans were ready to pitch in to help Mitt Romney win the White House this fall.

"The good news is, we have a deep bench of folks in the Republican Party; governors and newly elected senators and some folks that have been around for a while," Rubio said on "Fox News Sunday." "We have a good team of people that can go across this country and sell Gov. Romney's message."

Rubio said he counted himself among the team players and fended off inquiries about the chances he would be Romney's vice-presidential nominee.

Rubio has been seen by political analysts and Beltway pundits as a promising choice to be Romney's running mate due to his popularity among staunch conservatives and his Latino heritage.

Rubio said Hispanic voters had more at stake in terms of the overall economy and downplayed the idea they were opposed to any attempts to limit illegal immigration.

"While there is no such thing as the Hispanic vote, there are some things that unify the Hispanic community," Rubio said. "Chief among them is an economic aspiration. They want to do better for themselves and they want to leave their children better off than themselves."
