WASHINGTON, May 6 (UPI) -- Newt Gingrich said Sunday he was not looking for any parting gifts from Mitt Romney in exchange for ending his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.
Gingrich denied there were any promises for financial assistance or a prominent role at the GOP convention made in exchange for getting out of the race and ending his pings against Romney.
"There's no negotiation," Gingrich said on CNN's "State of the Union. "If they think I'm helpful speaking at the convention, I'm glad to do it."
Gingrich said that as a lifelong Republican loyalist, his priority was helping his party win not only the presidency but both houses of Congress as well. "Then I want him to give my grandchildren a better future than they're going to get under Barack Obama," he added. "That's all I ask out of him."
To that end, Gingrich said he was discussing campaign appearances on Romney's behalf but said Romney's brain trust was making the decisions on the extent. "We're talking about several dates and several major events we're going to do together," he said. "I have said to the campaign I will be available at their convenience to do anything they want me to do because they're in charge. This is their campaign."
