Biden says Romney's economic plan lacking

WASHINGTON, May 6 (UPI) -- Vice President Joe Biden said Sunday that while the U.S. economy was still on a slow road to recovery, Mitt Romney wasn't offering any ideas to speed things up.

Biden said on NBC's "Meet the Press" Romney's economic plan appeared to be based on the idea of cutting taxes for the wealthy and then assuming their windfall would somehow translate to more jobs for the put-upon middle class.

"He talks about another $2 trillion in tax cuts for the very wealthy?" Biden said on NBC. "You're going to create jobs? Is that how he's going to do it?"

Biden warned that Republicans planned to offset the upper-end tax reductions by taking an ax to spending programs such as Medicare and education that are important not only to the middle class but to future economic development.

The Democratic vice president also took a potshot at the notion the presumptive Republican nominee's business experience make him a better choice for managing the fragile and evolving economy. "When he was in business, how did he save companies? By piling debt on them," Biden said. "When he was governor, he ranked 47th out of 50 states in job creation."

Biden said President Obama's policies were steadily improving the overall economy and job situation, and opined that progress would be faster if not for Republican opposition in Congress.

"These guys wouldn't even let us put 400,000 teachers, firefighters and cops back to work by a 0.5 percent [tax] on the first dollar after the first $1 million you made. Come on, man."
