NEW YORK, May 2 (UPI) -- News Corp.'s board of directors Wednesday said in a statement it has "full confidence" in Rupert Murdoch's "fitness" as chairman and chief executive officer.

"The board of directors of News Corp. met today and announced its full confidence in Rupert Murdoch's fitness and support for his continuing to lead News Corp. into the future as its chairman and CEO," the statement said.

"The board based its vote of confidence on Rupert Murdoch's vision and leadership in building News Corp., his ongoing performance as chairman and CEO, and his demonstrated resolve to address the mistakes of the company identified in the select committee's report."

A panel of Britain's Parliament Tuesday called Murdoch "not a fit person" to run the multinational media conglomerate in the wake of the phone hacking scandal that brought down one of his U.K. tabloids, News of the World.
