Vandals trash San Francisco neighborhood

SAN FRANCISCO, May 1 (UPI) -- Vandals marched through the Mission District of San Francisco, damaging at least 30 buildings, cars and a police station, after an Occupy rally, officials said.

Following a demonstration Monday night in Dolores Park, in advance of a Tuesday general strike planned by the Occupy movement, a group of masked and black-wearing protesters smashed windows with crowbars and threw paint and eggs on cars and storefronts, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Tuesday.

"It was like the station was under siege," a police officer said of the Mission police station, which ended the evening marred with pink and yellow paint, and its glass doors broken. At least one person was arrested.

While other Occupy protesters denied solidarity with the vandals, store owners expressed frustration with the incident.

"They're coming through the Mission, where there aren't any corporations, just a lot of small businesses, which is what they're all about. It doesn't make sense," said Adam Koskoff, a restaurant manager whose business was damaged.

"Occupy is saying it's not them. But we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Occupy, would we?" said Michelle Horneff-Cohen as she surveyed the broken window of the real estate brokerage where she works.
