Police kill 1, wound 2 at site of burglary

CHICAGO, April 30 (UPI) -- Chicago police fatally shot a man and wounded two others after they crashed a car through a steel door trying to escape from a burglary scene, police said.

Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police, said the car struck a police officer, causing bruises, hit a police car and was headed toward several officers, who fired at the car early Monday, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The incident began when officers responded to a call of a burglary at an electronics store in the 2400 block of South Western Avenue, Camden said.

Officers who had spotted the three men inside the store surrounded it, knocked on doors and urged them to surrender, Camden said.

But he said the men got into a car belonging to the store's owner that was parked inside the business and drove through the metal door.

One of the men in the car was dead at the scene, Camden said. The other two were taken to Stroger Hospital. The Tribune said their conditions were not known.

The injured officer was treated for bruises at Mount Sinai Hospital, Camden said.
