WASHINGTON, April 29 (UPI) -- U.S. President Obama poked fun at himself and his likely Republican opponent at the 98th annual White House Correspondents Dinner Saturday night.

Referring to a recent flap over his eating dog meat as a child, Obama asked the audience, "What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull?" The answer, he said, is "a pit bull is delicious."

In a dig at the former Massachusetts governor who has all but wrapped up the Republican presidential nomination, Obama said it was nice to be at the dinner in the spiffy Washington Hilton, "or as Mitt Romney would call it, a fixer-upper."

The Los Angeles Times reported Obama also noted both he and Romney have degrees from Harvard University. "I have one, he has two. What a snob," he quipped.

Later, in a reference to Republican complaints that the president and other Democrats are pitting the wealthy against middle-income and poor Americans, Obama said, "I have not seen 'The Hunger Games.' Not enough class warfare."

The evening's host, comedian Jimmy Kimmel, delivered a routine that centered on recent scandals and other news headlines. But he elicited few laughs among the journalists in the audience with his answer of "nothing any more" to the question "What's black and white and read all over?"

He closed out his monologue by rattling off the types of people at the dinner, such as members of the media, politicians and celebrities. "Everything that is wrong with America is here in this room," he concluded.
