Man drowns while fleeing aggressive swan

DES PLAINES, Ill., April 16 (UPI) -- Authorities in Illinois said a worker drowned after being attacked by a swan used to scare off geese.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office said Anthony Hensley, 37, of Villa Park worked for a company that uses swans and dogs to keep geese away from properties. He was out in a kayak Saturday checking on some swans at the Bay Colony condominiums in the Des Plaines area when one of the birds began swimming toward him aggressively, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday.

Investigators said Hensley fell out of his kayak and attempted to make it to shore with the swan in pursuit, but he drowned before rescue personnel arrived.

The sheriff's office said the swan is believed to have attacked because Hensley came to close to the bird or its nesting area.
