8 soldiers face court-martial in suicide

FORT BRAGG, N.C., April 12 (UPI) -- Eight soldiers charged with racial harassment of a Chinese-American comrade who killed himself are to be court-martialed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

The Army announced the location of the court-martial Wednesday, The Fayetteville Observer reported.

Danny Chen, a 19-year-old private from New York, shot himself in October in a guard tower in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Eight soldiers were charged in December, a lieutenant with dereliction of duty and five sergeants and two enlisted men with a variety of counts.

Chen and the soldiers who have been charged were members of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, which is based at Fort Wainwright in Alaska. In Afghanistan, however, they were under the command of the 82nd Airborne, based at Fort Bragg.

Dates have not yet been set for the courts-martial.
