SURFSIDE BEACH, Texas, April 8 (UPI) -- Texas police say they suspect a fatal shooting was connected to a large Gulf Coast beach party that was advertised on social media.
One person was killed and two others were injured when gunfire broke out at Surfside Beach where an estimated 15,000-20,000 young people from the Houston and Galveston areas had flocked for an all-day party Saturday.
"We let them party as much as they wanted and it got out of hand," Surfside Beach Police Chief Gary Phillips said.
KTRK-TV, Houston, said witnesses reported seeing a number of fights and overall rowdy behavior leading up to the gunfire. The motive for the shooting was not known and no suspects were in custody Sunday.
Police said the party had been advertised with an online invitation promising free food, drinks and live entertainment. No permit had been issued for the bash.
