California teen breaks up with teacher

MODESTO, Calif., April 8 (UPI) -- A California high school student says she has broken off her relationship with her business teacher after he was arrested on sexual-assault charges.

Jordan Powers, 18, Modesto, told ABC News she broke the news to 41-year-old James Hooker this weekend when he called from jail.

"I lost everything for this guy," said Powers. "I lost my senior year. I gave up all my friends at high school because they didn't agree with me."

Powers' relationship with Hooker surfaced earlier this year when the pair moved in together after dating for several months.

Hooker, who had left his wife and children to take up with Powers, was suspended by the Modesto City Schools District and then arrested Friday on charges he had assaulted another teenage girl 14 years ago.

The Modesto (Calif.) Bee said Sunday that Powers had left the state after Hooker's arrest. Hooker has avoided reporters since posting bail and has an initial court hearing pending Tuesday.
