FALLS CHURCH, Va., April 3 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney returned home from a Virginia hospital after undergoing a heart transplant 10 days ago, his office said Tuesday.
Cheney, 71, who has had a history of heart problems including at least five heart attacks since 1978, was on a cardiac transplant list for nearly two years and received a donor heart at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., CNN reported Tuesday.
His surgeries in the past have included the implant of a pacemaker and a ventricular assist device.
A statement from Cheney's office mentioned "deep gratitude to the donor and the donor's family for this remarkable gift."
Cheney, a former Wyoming congressman, was vice president in the George W. Bush administration from 2001-2009.
