Couple charged with embezzling $750,000

NASHVILLE, March 28 (UPI) -- The former financial manager of a national non-profit group and her husband have been charged in Tennessee with embezzling $730,000.

Risa Woodward, 45, and her husband, James, 48, were arrested Tuesday and were being held on $250,000 bail each, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported. An indictment charging the Hendersonville couple with 10 counts of fraud was unsealed, Susan Niland, a spokeswoman for the Davidson County district attorney, said.

The American Association for State and Local History, which has its headquarters in Nashville, said Risa Woodward resigned last year after 20 years with the organization. She became financial manager in 1994.

Doug Jones, a lawyer for the association, said officials there realized money was missing a few weeks after Woodward left.

"Around Labor Day weekend is when we really discovered it," he said. "Believe or not she covered her tracks so well.'

The association works with universities, museums and other organizations to promote the learning of state and local history.
