SAN DIEGO, March 27 (UPI) -- Two of presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's aides told San Diego police computers containing valuable campaign information were stolen from their rented vehicle.
The two campaign aides said they left their rented sport utility vehicle at a parking garage while they picked up dinner, but when they returned two iPads, two handheld radios and two laptops were missing, KGTV, San Diego, reported Monday.
"This could just be a coincidence," political analyst Carl Luna said. "Then again, given this campaign season and how negative it's been, dirty tricks are not alien to American politics."
Police said there was no sign of forced entry on the SUV and it is not clear whether the theft was random or if the aides were targeted.
"Best case scenario for the Romney camp … these things are going to be sold at a swap meet on the side," Luna said. "Worst case scenario … some of this stuff makes it onto the Internet and if somebody could spin it against them they might."
The former Massachusetts governor's campaign spokesman told KGTV Romney is not concerned the stolen information could be damaging.
