Baby left on daycare center doorstep

ODESSA, Texas, March 27 (UPI) -- An Odessa, Texas, daycare facility found a duffel bag containing a newborn boy on its doorstep and authorities are investigating the incident.

At the Kidz Korral Daycare Center, director Marie Jones said she unzipped the bag Monday afternoon and found a baby and a note reading, "Please take care of my baby. I am too young. My parents don't understand. I don't believe in killing babies. I want someone who believes in God."

The child was taken inside and then to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa for evaluation after which he discharged and placed in a foster home, KWES-TV. Odessa, reported Tuesday.

He had been on the doorstep for about an hour, and with temperatures in the 80s Monday, fortunately left in the shade, a person in the daycare center said.

Although the child was left at a daycare center, the incident does not qualify as a "safe haven" event, Child and Family Services said. Texas law permits babies under the age of 60 days to be legally abandoned at hospitals, fire departments or emergency care facilities.

An investigation is under way.
