2-year-old found alive near woman's body

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt., March 27 (UPI) -- Police say they found a 2-year-old boy safe in a vehicle near a body believed to be that of Vermont teacher Melissa Jenkins, missing since Sunday.

A police report stated the body was discovered about 1:30 p.m. Monday on a remote road about 10 miles outside St. Johnsbury, near Barnet.

Jenkins' sport utility vehicle was found nearby with her toddler son still inside and unharmed. While police said there was evidence of a struggle, the cause of death and conclusive identification of the body were pending an autopsy Tuesday.

WCAX, Burlington, reported Jenkins, 33, left her St. Johnsbury home Sunday night and never returned.

More than 100 people gathered in Danville Monday to mourn the St. Johnsbury Academy science teacher.

Investigators were tight-lipped regarding further details, including whether or not there was a possible suspect in Jenkins' death. They were, however, urging anyone with information to come forward.
