California building overrun with rats

NEWBURY PARK, Calif., March 24 (UPI) -- A Newbury Park, Calif., apartment complex is overrun by rats, even after local news reporters investigated the issue, tenants say.

KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, recently aired a segment about the more than 100-unit building crawling with rats.

"Just opening my door, there's rat feces everywhere," resident Holly Nevlin told reporters.

Tenants say that even since the news station reported on the issue, the problem has worsened, with rats drinking out of water faucets and crawling near windows. Rat traps have proven useless, as one resident says a rat was snared but later eaten by other rats.

Essex Property Trust, the management company for the complex, released a statement Tuesday, saying, "We employ preventative pest control measures and address all concerns of our residents."
