March 21, 2012 at 4:27 PM

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., March 21 (UPI) -- Twenty people were detained on suspicion of illegal entry to the country Wednesday when their boat landed on an El Segundo, Calif., beach, officials said.

Fifteen men, four women and one child aboard a Mexican-style panga were detained and turned over to U.S. Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents after they arrived on El Segundo's shores at 6:45 a.m. near the NRG power plant, federal officials told The (Torrance) Daily Breeze.

Witnesses reported seeing people running from the vessel in all directions as lifeguards, police and Coast Guard officers moved in, El Segundo police Lt. Ray Garcia told the newspaper.

Garcia said the boat left Tijuana, Mexico, Tuesday evening.

Several similar boats have arrived on area beaches in recent months, the newspaper said.
