CHICAGO, March 20 (UPI) -- Chicago police say they questioned a "person of interest" in the shooting of an officer Tuesday morning while the victim recovered in an intensive care unit.
The 47-year-old tactical officer stopped to question a group in South Chicago after reports of a "juvenile disturbance" around 10:45 p.m. Monday night. When one broke off and ran, the offer pursued until reaching a front yard where the suspect turned around and opened fire, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The officer was shot in the left upper-chest area, barely missing his bulletproof vest. The bullet was lodged next to his spine, causing internal bleeding, the Chicago-Sun Times reported. He lost about two thirds of his blood before doctors were able to stop the bleeding.
Police say the suspect in custody is 20-years-old, apprehended after the execution of two search warrants, the Tribune reported.
