DES MOINES, Iowa, March 19 (UPI) -- The Republican Party of Iowa approved the formation of a committee Monday to investigate problems that surfaced in the party's state caucuses in January.
The committee will be jointly led by Bill Schickle, co-chairman of the state GOP, and Mary Mosiman, deputy secretary of state for elections, the party said in a release.
Initially, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was declared the winner of the Iowa caucuses, but a review found that former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania actually won by fewer than three dozen votes.
"The purpose of the committee is to conduct a full audit and review of the Republican caucus," Schickel said. "We're going to review what went right and what went wrong. We will fix what went wrong and promote what went right."
The snafu led to the resignation of state GOP Chairman Matt Strawn.
While the review concerns the Republican caucuses, "we will be acting in consultation with our colleagues in the Democrat Party," Schickel said. "Having open, honest and transparent caucuses is in the interest of all Iowans."
