DETROIT, March 16 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Hansen Clarke, D-Mich., said Friday he plans to seek a deal with the federal government to obtain economic relief for cash-strapped Detroit.
Clarke asked Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder not to appoint an emergency manager for the city until he is able to broker a deal with Congress, The Detroit News reported. So far, Clarke said, he's gotten no feedback from the feds regarding his request.
"Even though Detroit is in a financial crisis, this current financial board has the power and the focus to cut staff, outsource departments and sell assets," said Clarke. "That's not the way you get out of a financial crisis. I've got to work to help save this city. The reason why I'm representing this city is to find a way to attract jobs and give people hope. I understand political reality, but I'm here to make the system to work for people, not to accept things can't change."
The legislation, which Clarke said he is prepared to introduce next week, would have to pass through both the Republican-led House and the Democratic-led Senate, the News said.
