MONTESANO, Wash., March 9 (UPI) -- A suspect was arrested Friday in the shooting of a deputy sheriff and the stabbing of a judge inside a courtroom near Olympia, Wash., police said.

Michael Thomas was arrested in Tumwater a short time after he allegedly began shooting inside the Grays Harbor County Courthouse in Montesano, The Seattle Times reported.

Thomas apparently escaped before the building was locked down and was at large for a brief period Friday afternoon, the sheriff's department told KING-TV, Seattle.

Thomas allegedly stabbed Superior Court Judge Dave Edwards and shot corrections officer Polly Davin, both of whom were in satisfactory condition at a hospital, the newspaper said.

Undersheriff Rick Scott told KING-TV Thomas was not believed to have been scheduled to appear in court Friday, and there was no word on any apparent motive for the shooting.
