26 percent would like temporary move

PRINCETON, N.J., March 9 (UPI) -- More than one-quarter of adults around the world say they would like to move to another country for a temporary job, a poll released Friday said.

The Gallup survey found more adults would prefer a temporary move than a permanent one. While 26 percent said they would move for a temporary job, only 14 percent would like a permanent move.

Sub-Saharan Africa, where many of the world's poorest countries are located, has the highest percentages of would-be migrants, with 49 percent saying they would make a temporary move. The region also has the highest percentage of adults who would like to leave for good.

In Asia, on the other hand, only 19 percent say they would like to move temporarily. There are marked differences between countries with 19 percent of Chinese adults saying they would like to live elsewhere for a while and only 8 percent of Indians.

Generally, those who would like a temporary relocation are younger and more likely to be underemployed than unemployed or employed at full capacity. Globally, 29 percent of adults in the workforce would like to make a change for a while.

The report is based on surveys of 141,000 people in 119 countries age 15 or older in 2009 and 2010. The margin of error ranges from 2.1 percentage points to 4.7 points.
