WASHINGTON, March 8 (UPI) -- A Texas-based group spent nearly $190,000 targeting incumbents in two Ohio congressional primaries, the founder of the group said.
Leo Linbeck III of Houston told the Washington Post his super PAC Campaign for Primary Accountability worked to defeat Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt and Democrat Rep. Marcy Kaptur on Tuesday.
Tea Party conservative and Iraq war veteran Brad Wenstrup defeated Schmidt but incumbent Dennis J. Kucinich lost to Kaptur in a redrawn Ohio district.
"We're trying to make the electoral system more competitive, so that Congress will become more accountable to the voters," Linbeck said.
He said the goal is not about policy but about governance.
"We're not interested in shifting power between Republicans and Democrats," Linbeck said. "We're interested in shifting power between Congress and the people."
Curtis Ellis, a spokesman for Campaign for Accountability, said the goal is to make congressional races more competitive.
The group said its next target is Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala.
