BALTIMORE, March 7 (UPI) -- A rifle allegedly used in the accidental killing of a 13-year-old Baltimore girl was found in a police officer's car, investigators say.
The officer was suspended Tuesday, The Baltimore Sun reported. The police department says the officer was in a relationship with a relative of one of the two boys charged in the shooting and may have advised the family on what to do.
Monae Turnage's brother found her body concealed by trash Sunday evening, the day after she disappeared. The family said they conducted their own search because police did not take their report that she was missing seriously.
Her family says Monae planned to go roller skating with four companions Saturday night but their plans changed because one of the youths did not have enough money for admission.
Investigators allege two boys, aged 12 and 13, accidentally shot Monae in the chest with a .22-caliber rifle designed as a replica AK-47 and then concealed her body.
The boys are charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Monae's mother says one of the boys called her Saturday night to say her daughter was on her way home. He called back some time later to ask if she had arrived.
