Goodman trial jury pool narrowed in Fla.

PALM BEACH, Fla., March 6 (UPI) -- The jury pool for the DUI manslaughter trial of Florida polo magnate John Goodman was narrowed to about two dozen potential jurors Tuesday.

WPTV-TV, West Palm Beach, reported the initial pool of 60 prospective jurors was trimmed to about two dozen who were told to report back in Wednesday morning.

The Wellington, Fla., resident is accused of driving his Bentley drunk and leaving the scene of a February 2010 accident that killed 23-year-old Scott Wilson. A blood sample taken from Goodman 3 hours after the crash indicated his blood-alcohol level was more than twice the level at which drivers in Florida are presumed to be impaired, The Palm Beach Post reported.

The prosecution planned to call witnesses who spent time with Goodman at The Player's Club restaurant and bar following a charity event.

Shortly after leaving the bar, Goodman allegedly ran a stop sign and crashed his Bentley GTC convertible into Wilson's Hyundai Sonata. The Hyundai overturned and plunged into a nearby canal.

With pretrial media coverage a concern, residing Palm Beach County Judge Jeffrey Colbath asked potential jurors, "Can you set aside those experiences that you've been exposed to?"

The judge ruled once testimony begins, jurors can be shown post-accident photos of Wilson and see the cars involved in the crash, WPTV said. They won't, however, be allowed to hear allegations Goodman was using cocaine.

The trial is expected to last about two weeks. If convicted, Goodman could receive as much as 30 years in prison.
