WASHINGTON, March 6 (UPI) -- U.S. House Speaker John Boehner says it is too soon to consider war with Syria.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday in Washington, the Ohio Republican said the Syrian situation is complicated and involving the United States at this point "would be premature," Politco reported.

Boehner's position directly opposes Sen. John McCain's call on Monday for U.S. airstrikes on Syria to protect civilians from brutal attacks by government forces.

McCain is the leading Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee and his call for airstrikes was supported by Sen. Joe Lieberman, chair of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, and Sen. Lindsey Graham .
