Doctor jailed in prescription drug deaths

LOS ANGELES, March 2 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles doctor accused in the prescription drug overdose deaths of three patients was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, authorities said.

Hsiu-Ying "Lisa" Tseng, 42, was scheduled to appear in court Friday after her arrest on a felony complaint filed by the district attorney's office, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles reported.

She was being held on $3 million bail, charged with second-degree murder and other crimes.

The three victims, young men who died in 2009, were patients of Tseng, who prescribed numerous drugs for them, investigators said.

"Deaths from overdoses of prescription drugs now outnumber deaths from traffic accidents in the United States," District Attorney Steve Cooley said in a statement. "Prescription drug overdose deaths have reached epidemic proportions. Enough is enough."

Tseng opened a medical office in Rowland Heights in 2005.

KTLA said the Drug Enforcement Administration began an investigation in 2008 after a pharmacy reported irregularities.

The DEA revoked Tseng's license to prescribe drugs and the Osteopathic Medical Board of California has moved to revoke her license.
